Quandary was a weekly education advice column by Hilary Wilce in The Independent. The archive says it ran on Thursdays from 2002 and tackled questions on schools, colleges, universities and adult learning.

How it worked

Readers sent in a dilemma and received a direct answer. The old website posted recent columns and let visitors search older ones by subject or date.

Questions from early 2009

  • Do multiple-choice exams penalise students who understand a subject deeply?
  • Could a disorganised son be labelled dyslexic to gain extra exam time?
  • Is it wise to push so many people into university?
  • How should parents handle local schools that group pupils differently?

Wider themes

Other headlines covered tutoring, diplomas, discipline, play, adult access courses and picking a primary school without league tables.
